The Bone Wars

The Bone Wars were a period of discovery that was essentially a gold rush for paleontologists. The war was a intense rivalry between two esteemed scientists, Othniel Charles Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope. They struggled for years to win by finding more  fossils than their rival by constantly travelling west and collecting. They published as many works as they could and often tried to bad mouth each other to the press and scientific community. Their rush often created errors in their work that created misconceptions which still plague the average person’s knowledge. What they ended up doing was bankrupting themselves and essentially killing themselves as well. Toward the last months of Cope’s life he medicated himself with huge doses of morphine to stay alive and get more work done. Even though the results of the rivalry were disastrous for the Cope and Marsh, the results in the scientific field were enormous. Together they identified over 135 new species including some of the best known dinosaurs like Triceratops and Allosaurus.

This Dinosaur is an Allosaurus Fragilis. It was discovered during the Bone Wars.
